Learn to Knit Short Rows with Lace

Short rows and lace in one relaxing summer project?

Yes, please.

This season in our Summer Seasons Club, we're diving into short row shaping, a knitting technique that is one of Carol's favourites. This is the first time she is teaching Japanese Short Rows in the club.

You'll get a gentle, guided introduction to knitting short rows, paired with a light, airy lace pattern that’s easy to follow and deeply satisfying to knit.

If you've been curious about short rows but weren’t sure where to start, this project is the perfect way to learn, stitch by stitch.

What Will You Knit?

In this season’s knitting club project, you’ll create a beautiful Ardaigh shawl a lace design with optional armholes, so you can wear it draped as a wrap or styled as a light summer vest.

The lace knitting pattern is simple to memorise, making it ideal if you're learning how to knit lace or want to improve your ability to read your stitches as you go.

You'll also get hands-on experience with two types of short rows:

  • German short rows – smooth and beginner-friendly
  • Japanese short rows – delicate and precise

By working both methods, you’ll discover where and why you might choose one short row technique over another, all within the comfort of one rewarding project.

Reviews

Thank goodness for the Teachable lessons. It is so obvious when Carol demonstrates, and I am sure I could work it out for myself, but it does take the stress out of getting it wrong.

Meet Your Knitting Teacher

Carol Feller trained initially as a textile artist and then as a structural engineer. While both backgrounds are very different, the influences can be seen in her design work, which is well-shaped, flattering to wear and enjoyable to knit.

Carol has been widely published in books and magazine and travels the world teaching in yarn shops and fibre festivals. The classes she teaches cover a wide range of subjects, from cables and chart reading, through garment shaping and customisation right through to short rows and colourwork. In her classes, you'll move from learning the basics to refining your knitting skills and fixing problems.
