Learn to knit a deep textured cable accessory set with our

in-depth workshop.

Sherkin Mitts

What's Included in this Workshop?

This workshop has full directions for two patterns (the Sherkin Hat and Sherkin Mitts), with multiple sizing options.

This workshop takes you through every step of knitting both patterns, from the cast-ons you'll need to deciding on size and correcting common cable problems.

Some of the techniques covered in this course are:

  • Cable Cast-On
  • Working Mistake Rib in Magic Loop.
  • Setting up Stronghorn Cable.
  • Working a Fishtail Cable.
  • Wave and Knot Stitch.
  • Setting up Thumb Gussets
  • Icelandic Bind-Off.,
  • How to block both patterns.

Behind The Design

In this accessory set, Carol Feller focused on the transitions between the sea and the land and wanted to represent each in the designs.

On the hat I started with Staghorn cable, that works into a pointed decrease at the crown. This very much felt like a cliff edge along a coastline. Then I combined that with a Wave and Knot pattern stitch, with the knitted columns waving in and out between the knot stitches.

The mitts are a much smaller canvas to work on, so the stitches used were simplified to just the Wave and Knot pattern which flow from an interesting Mistake Rib at the cuff.

Meet Your Teacher

Carol Feller trained initially as a textile artist and then as a structural engineer. While both of these backgrounds are very different the influences can be seen in her design work which is well-shaped, flattering to wear and enjoyable to knit.

She strives to design clothing with a difference: not overly complex, but still giving a very unique end product. She likes to work with different construction methods, so long as they enhance the knitting experience and make for a more intuitively put-together knitted item.

Carol has been widely published in books and magazine and travels the world teaching in yarn shops and fibre festivals. The classes she teaches cover a wide range of subjects from cables and chart reading, through garment shaping and customisation right through to short rows and colourwork. In her classes you'll move from learning the basics to refining your knitting skills and fixing problems.

Deas yarn skeins in a pile.

Would you like a yarn kit?

Find all the yarn you need for the Sherkin Set in the warm, earthy tones of Stolen Stitches ‘Deas’. Just pick your bust size and colour.

Deas is an aran weight Irish yarn, 86% Merino Wool and 14% Mohair woollen spun yarn with a soft halo when blocked. The mohair content creates a warm fabric that is deceptively light to wear.

The Sherkin Hat is knit in the ‘Jade’ colour and the Sherkin Mitts were knit in the ‘Lime’.

Customer Review:

"I LOVE Deas: it is a perfect ‘woolly’ yarn. Beautiful handle, wonderfully soft but with an earthy bounce. It gives great stitch definition, perfect for cables. Rustic and sumptuous all at once, it is a delight."

Jennene J.

"It looks a bit rustic but it's soft and very squishy. I love the tweedy look of the yarn. Knitting with Deas is a pleasure, very kind on your hands. It blooms quite nicely after blocking."

Joni B.
